So I'm not really that great at cooking before 10pm.
Today's experiment was one that I have wanted to try for awhile. The original idea was for a turkey, camembert and cranberry pie. However, alas, my Coles didn't have turkey on Monday night. And I can't find pie crusts anywhere. So instead, I decided on a Chicken Camembert and Cranberry Vol Au Vent (Or as I like to call them, my CCC Vol Au Vents (Pronounced triple C)) since there were Vol Au Vent things at Coles.
As will be seen in the following photos, I was accompanied by my good/ best friend Nick. We discussed everything from theology to menstruation and often both. He provided good company, but no cooking help.
I used a cheap $6 Coles family BBQ chicken for the chicken (It was reduced from $10.90!!! :D) For the camembert, I used a random cheep thing. I couldn't find any pure cranberry jam, so had to use a cranberry, strawberry and and raspberry (or something) jam.
The packet of camembert was 125g, so I used all of it with about 125g of butter. I melted butter in the microwave, and then added slices of camembert. I tried to mix it and reheat it. But the camembert was stubborn and didn't want to combine. Eventually, I chucked it into the blender. It got sticky annoying stuff all inside the blender, but worked. I then nuked it a couple more times to make it less lumpy and kept stirring it. (Idealy, you would boil water on the stove then mix it all in a metal bowl on that boiling water, but I didn't have a metal bowl.)
I then added about a breast and a half of chopped chicken to the mix and mixed it a lot. I kind of added chicken until it was properly covered. I then got an egg, whisked it, and then painted it on the inside and the top of the Vol au Vents. I added the mixture in layers, putting some jam on top of every layer and mixing it slightly with a fork. Then put it into a preheated 180C fan forced oven.
After about 10 minutes, I took them out then topped them with the left over egg. Then left them for about 20 minutes until the egg cooked nicely. It made 5.
This was the result:

Another top view - Oh wait! NICK

"We've been circling each other in an intricate dance for days, but now I have you. I don't know whether to eat you, or to kiss you..."

Nick finally snaps. The animal is unleashed. But something holds him back. He undergoes another metamorphosis.

Nick, now in a state of pure ecstasy, prepares to become one with the Vol Au Vent.
To take it all in.
To be made complete.
As for how they turned out. They were pretty good. I enjoyed them a bit. Nick enjoyed them a great deal. The combination of the pastry and the sweet and savoury. His one small critique was that it could stand to be less sweet and that he would like to contrast these with a purely savoury one. I'm quite glad with it.
For those playing at home, here's a recipe's recipe:
125g Camembert
125g Butter
Cranberry jam (or whatever jam has cranberry in it)
1.5 large cooked chicken breasts
1 Egg, beaten
1. Preheat fanforced oven to 180C.
2. Melt butter in microwave. (Or in a metal bowl over boiling water if possible)
3. Add slices of camembert and mix.
4. Keep microwaving to help it mix. Maybe blend. (The metal bowl method might work better here.)
5. Add chopped chicken breast to mixture and coat well.
6. Paint inside and top with egg.
7. Put layers of mixture in the Vol au Vents (5) then add jam on top and press it with a fork.
8. Once the Vol au Vent is nearly filled, put in oven for 10 mins.
9. Take out and fill Vol au Vents and fill with left over egg return to the oven for 20 mins.
10. Take out and serve. Makes 5.
So yeah, it is that.
P.S. Did I use Vol au Vents right? Should that s be there? Is the t pronounced?
P.P.S. Check out my Flickr page (linked from the photos). It's pretty cool. Show it some love!
If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the frypan.
